Training Target Group

This course is designed for experienced or beginner PLC-programmers who want to develop software according to IEC 61131-3. The course is also designed for support and implementation engineers who modify systems programmed according to IEC 61131-3.

Training (Pre) Knowledge

To join this course knowledge on PLC systems and Control techniques is required. Some experience with PLC Application Development is advantageous.

Training Global Contents

Learning to program (develop) according to IEC 61131-3 results in reading and understanding an IEC 61131-3 program. The course outlines the practical advantages of the standard e.g. documentation and structure of the program. Due to developments in the industrial market producers may not always be 100 % standard compliant. Participants of the course will be trained to recognise IEC 61131-3 compliant characteristics and those that are not. Contents of this course comply with the demands as laid down in the document ‘Specification of requirements for a standard IEC 61131-3 training course’ of PLCopen. The course is certified and the certificates handed out at the end of the training will carry the PLCopen logo which makes the participant a ‘Certified IEC 61131-3 programmer’.

Training Methods

The course contains both theory and practice. The theoretical part presents all concepts and structure of IEC 61131-3. Significant attention is paid to "onhands" practice with specially developed example programs to sustain the theoretical part and the participant must use a Programming and Support Environment (PSE) for implementation on a certain system. Programming environments are: STEP 7 (Siemens), CodeSys (Beckhoff, IFM, etc.), Multiprog-Wt (KW, Festo, Hitachi, etc.), ISAGraf (SIXNET, Festo, etc.).

Training Specific Contents

  • IEC 61131-3 and PLCopen.
  • Software model, communication model and programming model.
  • Joint language elements in the five languages:
    • Data types and variables
    • Functions and functions materials
    • Programs and tasks
  • The Programming Languages Instruction List (IL), Structured Text (ST), Ladder Diagram (LD), Function Block Diagram (FBD) and Sequential Function Chart (SFC).
  • Application Development according to IEC 61131-3.
